Should all people be heard and all views be shared in society?

Recommended Posts

Guest Henry - UK

Freedom of speech, opinion and expression is important in every society - but, there is then a risk of causing harm to others through what is said - and there is a fine line to draw a distinction between what is OK and what is not OK. For example:

If I am wearing a blue t-shirt and someone says 'don't like your t-shirt' - I might be offended but there is nothing wrong with them expressing there opinion. If someone says 'Everyone in blue t-shirts should die' then they are making a hate-statement, posing a threat to society and inciting violence. There is a big difference between the two examples but allowing people to say the first one means that others may say the second - in the UK saying things like the second can be seen as a hate-crime, but is often hard to police, in other places it may be allowed.

This means that everyone in society should play a part in ensuring a healthy society by protecting the social space in which people voice their opinions. Everyone in society will voice there opinion but it is up to the rest of society whether that opinion is heard and shared amongst them. People in society should be encouraged to challenge what others say if they think it is wrong - but they should do so in a calm and respectful way. If someone is encouraging violence then that person needs to be referred to the police/ told that what they are doing is wrong.

All views should be shared and voiced but not necessarily given the same platform

Who gets to decide if people should have a platform or not to speak and be heard? How can we decide this and police this together as a caring society?

Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights a person can have, and people should be allowed to express their views whatever their age, gender, race or religion. With this we of course run the risk of views being heard that we do not believe to be ‘right’, but it is only by hearing a wide variety of voices that we can begin to understand other viewpoints and learn to discern right from wrong.

What about people with views that harm others a lot? People who start wars or preach hate and death and discrimination. Should we let their views be heard and try to keep them quiet so they don't influence others? Hitler for example - should he have been given the microphone or not?

The freedom to speak one's mind + be heard & listened could/should be moderated at times. Some people might say harmful/awful things to others just because they can! Power (im)balance + intent need to be considered.

Women and girls are often not taken seriously and heard when they share their thoughts & ideas! So let's listen to women + girls more!

How can we do this? Some places like parliament and many places for speaking can be a bit shouting and intimidating and maybe that is why some ladies choose not to join in.

Because through view sharing, many people can be helped.

We must make safe spaces for women to be heard without feeling intimidated, maybe if women made groups to discuss their thoughts together and then share them collectively. However, we must also make sure than women and girls are taken seriously not just given a space to be heard but then their views ignored in decision making

Yes because it helps us get employment if our views are heard by all people.

Yes, because this helps the ones in need to get the help and attention like for example the children who live on the streets.

I think that everyone should have a right to share their opinions as long as they respect the opinions of others and try not to cause offence.

How do you think we can make sure the nice ideas are shared more than the ideas which aren't nice?

Agreed, it should not be up to one authority/person/centralised system to decide this.  I believe the only viable option is to allow free speech and allow the general public to make their minds up

Does this mean you will only choose to share views that an employer would agree with?

Yes because if their conflicts between the two people and they are brought to society they can be solved.

No, because there are people who are not happy and interested in in hearing what others have to say in society and even if they heard, they are not ready and willing to help.

All people should  be heard because particular individuals may not conquer with the views of another person  so its good for all views to be heard and shared
